Information Security

Under the general direction of the CIO, the Information Security Office (ISO) is responsible for the development and delivery of a comprehensive information security and privacy program for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). The scope of this program is university-wide, and includes information in electronic, print and other formats. Check out ISO Services from the Information Technology website, or contact us directly for more information and assistance with your cyber security needs.

February 2025:

Be aware of getting emails purporting to be from someone you know, yet show the [EXTERNAL] tag in the subject line.  The [EXTERNAL] tag means the email came from outside of UCCS, so the person you know may be a victim of email spoofing.  Proceed with caution with any emails containing that tag.

We've also observed a rise of phishing attacks involving Sharepoint Online.  Please be mindful of random emails coming from Sharepoint that require you to log in to view Word or Excel documents.  That's how the attackers get your username and password. Attackers try to impersonate the Chancellor or other faculty/staff but the email comes from a completely different address.  Note the example below:

A real phishing attempt

The heading says it's from Chancellor Sobanet, but the actual Sharepoint file is at Virginia Wesleyan University, not UCCS.
As always, you can report these emails as Spam/Phishing through your Outlook client, or you may forward them to security@uccs.edu. Thank you for your continued vigilance and keeping UCCS safe from cyber attacks!
